Track inspections and closeout
Finish with approvals, documentation, and a clear list of remaining work.
Know the inspection stages
The issuing authority may require inspections before work is covered and after completion. Confirm the sequence on the approved permit. Ask the contractor who schedules inspections and how the results will be shared with you.
Record corrections
If an inspector identifies work to correct, save the written notice and the plan to address it. Confirm reinspection where required before treating that stage as complete. Never rely on a verbal claim that a required inspection has passed.
Walk the project
Prepare a punch list with locations, photographs, and agreed dates. Test doors, fixtures, switches, equipment, and drainage where practical. Separate cosmetic items from safety, function, and required approvals.
Collect the final package
Request final approvals, as-built information if prepared, warranties, manuals, paint and finish details, keys, and contractor or subcontractor contacts. Retain contracts and payment records. Check with the local authority about any final certificate or permit closure required for your project.
