Select materials with purpose
Choose products based on performance, maintenance, fit, and availability.
Start with the use case
A finish that works for a low-traffic room may fail in a wet area or busy commercial setting. Document the intended use, climate exposure, cleaning needs, fire or slip requirements, and any accessibility needs before selecting solely by appearance.
Request precise specifications
Record manufacturer, model, dimensions, finish, installation method, lead time, and acceptable substitutions. Confirm that a product works with adjacent assemblies and site conditions. Ask the installer and design professional to resolve conflicting instructions before installation.
Plan for delivery and storage
Determine who orders, receives, inspects, stores, and protects each item. Check return terms and delivery windows. A delayed item can hold up other trades; a damaged or wrong item should be documented as soon as it arrives.
Save care and warranty information
Collect product manuals, maintenance instructions, warranty terms, and finish schedules in the project folder. A warranty is only as useful as the record of what was installed and how it should be maintained.

Questions to ask
- Is this product suited to the installed condition?
